چکیده
Abstract This study analyzes the relationships between stress changes produced by water load variations due to filling operations at Pirrís Reservoir, Costa Rica, and generated three relevant earthquakes after first impoundment. The differ in their magnitude, distance from reservoir depth. Two of them correspond a shallow crustal faulting, third earthquake corresponds subduction thrust-fault. began March 2011 daily time history levels was available until December 2017. seismicity has been recorded dense local network seismological stations operating since January 2008. Effects both types sources (water loads earthquakes) were combined obtain total Coulomb Failure Stress area, analyzing which dominant each case time. We then analyzed effects pore pressure diffusion on nearby including two studied earthquakes. Results lead different conclusions depending characteristics earthquake. An important result is observed occurrence earthquake, where coseismic become along entire eclipsing effect loading all depths. shows that regime stressed regional albeit its moderate distance, barely perceptible. In absence tectonic activity, however, impact notable.

Data from the national tumor registry of Costa Rica for the years 1979-1983 have been used to calculate incidence rates for the major cancer sites by age, sex, urban-rural residence, and geographic region. Recent trends in mortality rates are also presented. Results are compared with data from elsewhere in Latin America, U.S.A., Europe, and Japan. Stomach cancer is the most frequent neoplasm in...
متن کاملFault reactivation due to theM7.6 Nicoya earthquake at the Turrialba-Irazú volcanic complex, Costa Rica: Effects of dynamic stress triggering
TheM7.6 Nicoya earthquake struck at the interface between the Cocos plate and the Caribbean plate on 5 September 2012 inducing a ground acceleration of 0.5 m s−2 at the Irazú-Turrialba volcanic complex. We use data from six seismic stations deployed around and atop the Irazú-Turrialba volcanic complex to show the increase of local seismic activity after the M7.6 Nicoya earthquake. The response ...

T his article describes how surgery developed in Costa Rica and how it was nurtured to its present status. The practice of surgery in Costa Rica developed slowly as a charitable service. In the past 3 decades, it became accessible to 87.6% of the population through the creation of a national health service system. Our objective herein is to give the reader an understanding of how surgical pract...
متن کاملThe Case of Costa Rica
In this paper, I discuss the reasons for Costa Rica’s economic performance over the last quarter of a century. Three complementary sets of policies (investments in human capital, careful stabilization, and an intelligent and aggressive integration into the world economy) explain the successful trends, and can be thought of—at least in hindsight—as a development strategy. While fruitful, this st...
